Five Peaks Virtual Challenge

I'm taking Canteen's Five Peaks Virtual Challenge...

…a month-long challenge to cover 68km in March - the combined trail distance of Australia’s five highest peaks.

Every year, 23,000 young Australians face the mountain that is a cancer journey. Whether facing their own cancer diagnosis, or dealing with a loved one’s cancer journey, climbing that peak means feeling isolated, lost, exhausted, and confused.

It’s terrifying, and no one should face it alone. That’s why I’m challenging myself and I need your support!

Please sponsor me today and make every km count! All funds raised will help young people, facing their hardest climb, get free access to Canteen’s cancer counselling, peer support and specialised in-hospital care.

Thank you for your support!

Day of rest

Wednesday 12th Mar
Due to undergoing a medical procedure tomorrow I have been ordered to not undertake any exercise today or before my procedure tomorrow morning.

Strange thing is I am not happy about it - this challenge has pushed me way out of my comfort zone. It has also surprised me.

In my youth I loved to run, participate in athletics at school and even do cross country. After moving out of home I still ran the blue lake every morning with my friend then we hit the gym then did a maccas run before TAFE or work.

As life went on I got busy with work, being a mum and just stopped consciously making an effort to run or walk. I did a lot of running around with work, my family, studying and other commitments and didn’t realise just what I had lost.

I know now by walking/running every day I cleared my head and gained back my mental health space. Physically I lost my endurance something I have fought hard to gain back after a car accident and now with complex health issues and gaining so much weight from lack of mobility, difficulty breathing due to a lung condition and living in constant pain - I had lost myself.

So with grace and perseverance I have challenged myself to undertake another challenge to complete 68km and I will achieve it because I have already managed far more kilometres than I thought possible.

So this is my letter of encouragement to myself and anyone who reads it - it doesn’t need to be at anyone else’s pace, it doesn’t need to be pretty and it certainly doesn’t need to be around others if it makes you uncomfortable but do it for yourself. YOU ARE WORTH IT. So here’s to my rest day to recharge me for the next days until I reach 68km and smash the five virtual peaks challenge.

Mount Ossa trail completed

Sunday 2nd Mar
Yesterday I hit the beach and took on the virtual challenge of Mount Ossa. It was tough on the sand but I did it. Maybe a lot longer than others would manage but it is not a race.

To me this challenge it is about progress not perfection and every step is another one in the right direction and it is physically and mentally pushing me to strive harder to help a charity I will forever champion for.

Today’s challenge was  the Mount Kosiosko trail and I pushed hard to start the incline, as it were. So far I am 7.6km into my challenge of 68km in March and it is my hope, plan and intention to smash that and my fundraising goal.

Massive thanks to those who have always supported me and to Clover, Sharon and of course my wonderful cousin Sophie for their generous donations to help me gift the opportunity of counselling and some respite for some well deserving young people.
